Discover Chinese

Who it’s for: Children starting to learn characters; children new to spoken Chinese begin with listening and speaking
What we learn: Chinese conversation, picture-based character recognition and basic strokes; no pinyin
Class time: Sundays 14:00–15:30

Progress in Chinese

Who it’s for: Children who use Chinese in everyday conversation and are ready for pinyin and reading texts
What we learn: Pinyin, characters and stroke order, first-grade Chinese texts
Class time: Sundays 16:00–17:30

How classes are organised

Groups start with 5 children, maximum 10
Grouped by age and Chinese level
90 minutes: two sessions with a 5-minute break
Conversation, observation, hands-on activities and practice alternate

Why pinyin comes later

At the introductory stage we build direct links between spoken Chinese and characters. At the next level, children already know the Latin letters used in Dutch or French at school, which makes it easier to tell apart how similar letters sound in each language. Pinyin starts when a child is ready.
